The BUILD Project invites applications for its Leadership Program in Integrated Population, Health, Environment & Development (PHED) for the Southern Africa region. This transformative program aims to develop the next generation of PHED leaders, focusing on women and young people.
Program Overview:
The BUILD Project is a five-year initiative funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Led by the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) in collaboration with partners, the project leverages Population, Health, Environment, and Development (PHED) to foster political commitment and financial resources for voluntary family planning and reproductive health in low- and middle-income countries.
The Southern Africa cohort’s inaugural training will be held in Malawi, offering two sessions: February 5-16, 2024, and April 22-May 3, 2024. The program seeks approximately 20 participants for each cohort, including advocates, community leaders, influencers, program officers, planners, and policymakers from Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Minimum Entry Requirements:
- Age: 18 to 29
- Proficiency in English
- Citizenship: Malawi, Zambia, or Zimbabwe
- Education: High school degree or equivalent
- Relevant qualifications or work experience
- Computer skills (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Docs Editors)
- Strong interest in gender, environment, health, family planning, or community development sectors
Program Duration:
The initial training spans 12 days, with a multi-day site visit to a PHED project. Following this, a 12-month virtual program supports participants in applying their learnings to real-world opportunities or challenges.

Content:
The program covers modules on integrated PHED, systems thinking, strategic communications, policy advocacy, gender and youth integration, entrepreneurship, and scaling-up methodology.
Tuition Fees:
The organizers cover tuition fees, travel costs, visas, accommodation, medical incidentals, and all meals for the duration of the initial training.
