Welcome to the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICT in Education! This prestigious award, funded by the Kingdom of Bahrain and established in 2005, aims to recognize and reward innovative projects that leverage digital technologies to enhance teaching, learning, and overall education performance. The 2023 edition of the prize focuses on the theme “Digital learning for greening education.”
About the Prize
The UNESCO ICT in Education Prize awards US $25,000 annually to two exceptional projects. The funding is geared towards initiatives that promote the integration of digital technologies to develop competencies and foster an active commitment to sustainable development among learners.
2023 Theme: Digital learning for greening education
At the Transforming Education Summit 2022, digital learning and greening education were identified as key priorities for advancing the Sustainable Development Goal 4 agenda. The theme for the 2023 edition is designed to explore synergies between digital learning and greening education, offering a platform to showcase best practices in utilizing digital technologies for sustainable development.
Project Requirements:
- Synergies: Develop climate-focused digital learning solutions with scalability, sustainability, and ethical considerations.
- Inclusion: Promote inclusive access to climate education programs through digital learning, emphasizing marginalized groups.
- Innovation: Design and test innovative pedagogical methodologies tailored for climate education.
- Climate Actions: Provide evidence of positive impacts fostering climate actions and behavioral changes in learners
Who can apply?
Individuals, institutions, NGOs, or entities passionate about digital learning for sustainable education.
Eligibility criteria:
- Relevant to the theme
- Ongoing for at least 1 year
- Not affiliated with UNESCO or receiving any funding from UNESCO
- The project should be public and free of charge

- Appropriateness of digital solutions
- Pedagogy innovation
- Inclusion and equity
- Evidence of impact
- Potential for replicability and scalability

Who can nominate?
Governments of the Member States of UNESCO, via their National Commissions, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in official partnership with UNESCO can make up to 3 nominations. Self-nominations are not accepted.
Important dates:
- December 2023: Launch of the call for nomination
- 5 February 2024: Deadline for submission
- March 2024: International Jury meeting
- September 2024: Award Ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters (to be confirmed)
